Left-wing Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-M) militants, also known as Naxalites, attacked a construction site in Jharkhand state on 26 June, causing damage to buildings and equipment at the site. This was the latest in a series of Naxalite attacks over the past month, and contributed to an increase in Naxalite activity across India's central and eastern states. The most significant attack occurred on 25 May, when 28 people died after Naxalites ambushed a convoy carrying the state leadership of the Indian National Congress (INC) party in Chhattisgarh state. Among the dead were prominent political leaders, party activists, and security forces personnel. The incident undermined government claims of a weakening capacity among left-wing extremists in India and led to invigorated talks about a new strategy to deal with the Naxalites.
